The Urban Paw team recently held a donation drive for pet food for an amazing organization called the Pets of the Homeless. Pets of the Homeless is the only national animal organization focused completely on feeding and providing emergency veterinary care to the pets of the homeless.
With such a large population of the homeless in Los Angeles, our team wanted to come together and support this innovative organization! Like many, we had no idea how many homeless Americans were pet owners. Out of 3.5 million homeless Americans, between 5% and 10% have dogs and/or cats. In some areas of the country the rate is as high as 24%. Pets of the Homeless works with individuals and businesses all around the U.S. and Canada to collect donations and distribute them to those in need.
Want to donate?
With a $25 gift they can feed and provide veterinary care for 3 dogs a day. With $50 they can help over 6 dogs and $100 will help 8 dogs for a day.

Dog Days of Summer is San Diego County's largest dog-centric event, hosted in Cardiff-by-the-Sea by Cardiff 101 Main Street. The event drew thousands of attendees from all over San Diego including residents and tourists. There were over 200 vendors showcasing everything from permanent makeup, cutlery, jewelry, home goods and all things pet related! Blessing of the Dogs with the Tibetan Buddhist Meditation Center started the slightly over cast morning.
Once the activities began the sun came out and it was good times for everyone with 10 dog contests, tasty food, live music, a kid's zone, a doggie cool zone, pet adoptions from local shelters & rescue organizations, an agility course, a doggie photo booth, and a large silent auction. We had an amazing time watching the never ending parade of pups moving up and down Newcastle St.
Pawduct testers Marley and Cali attended the event as well. They provided great assistance in demonstrating all positions a dog could get better sleep in our awesome and innovative pet products.
Last week the Urban Paw team volunteered our time to give a little lovin' to the cats and dogs at the Best Friends Animal Society No Kill Los Angeles adoption center. Among the cuties patiently waiting for their forever homes was Mauri. This sweet boy acted as many shelter cats do when strangers come around. He was shy, skiddish and not very playful.
But after some patience, TLC and a little coaxing, Mauri finally came out of his shell and was ready to strut along the catwalk!
This is not the first transformation our team has seen while volunteering with shelter animals and will definitely not be the last. Every dog and cat adjusts to shelter life in different ways and volunteers can help make that transition easier. The shelter can be a noisy and scary place and a little love and attention could be the difference in helping a shelter pet open up and find its forever home. If you are interested in adopting Mauri, go visit him at NKLA where you can also learn more about volunteer opportunities!
On June 27th, the Urban Paw team joined forces with other pet-friendly organizations to help raise funds for K9 Connection, programs in continuation high schools that offer teens the chance to break through learning and life barriers by training and bonding with homeless dogs.
We were so excited to be included in such an amazing event hosted by an organization whose mission resonates with our entire team. It was such a moving experience to see so many people gather in support to bring kids and dogs together. We were in awe as we observed the Disc Dogs perform with precision and swiftness. We tasted delicious treats, human and doggie alike. Our very own PAWduct Tester, Marley, even completed the Doggie Fun Zone! Our team closed out the event by raffling off some of our functional and fashionable pet beds to some adorable dogs at the event!
A big thank you to K9 Connection for including us in the event and for working tirelessly to make the world a better place for kids and pets! Learn more about K9 Connection and how you can support them today.
As much as we love our work, the Urban Paw team loves getting out in the animal rescue community and giving back! Together, and in our personal lives, we all find ways to volunteer and help homeless pets find their forever homes.
Every month the Urban Team hosts a day of service at a local rescue or shelter. This month, we volunteered at Best Friends Animal Society No-Kill Los Angeles adoption center. Our team members walked a few sweet pups and cuddled with some cats! We love meeting these wonderful pets and sharing their stories in hopes of helping them find their forever homes. Check out how you can get involved and maybe even find a new family member!
Ben and Jon spent some time this month getting to know the cats at NKLA during cat socialization training. Each cat has a personality of their own and some need a little extra TLC. Ben and Jon learned about helping shelter cats become comfortable with their new surroundings and adjusting to the big change in their lives. Get involved!
Our social cause coordinator, Lena, volunteers regularly with Boxer Rescue LA. Lena visits the shelter each month to walk the dogs at the kennel, she also volunteers at fundraising and community outreach events. Learn more about Boxer Rescue Los Angeles!
Walter is a gorgeous 7 month old black and white lab/pit/dane blend weighing 45 pounds. When Wags and Walks rescued Walter from a high kill shelter, he could not walk due to fractures in his back legs caused by extreme malnutrition. Walter has made a complete recovery and is a happy and active puppy now, though he may always have an awkward stride which he makes up for with his good looks! Walter knows his basic commands like sit and down, is crate trained, house trained and leash trained. This big puppy is an extremely loyal guy, following his foster mom everywhere. Walter is very affectionate and would do well in an active home with no other dogs or in a home with other active dogs. He is also cat friendly. Walter is healthy, up to date on vaccinations, neutered and mircochipped.
If you are interested in adopting Walter, please submit an application at http://www.wagsandwalks.org/adoption-applicationWags n Walks is a nonprofit pet rescue located in Los Angeles that focuses on rehoming dogs who are looking for a second chance in life. On Saturday May 9 the San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) held its annual Walk for Animals event at NTC Park in Liberty Station. UPP there to support them in their efforts to raise funds for this terrific organization. We were able to display our beautiful products and help animals in need, two of our favorite things!
Mother Nature threatened to rain on the walkers as she had done the day before and early that morning. But no such luck…by time the walkers gathered for the 9am trek around the park, the clouds parted and the sun emerged. Everyone was fueled up with yummy pancakes, hot coffee and great live music provided by SDHS volunteers. The enormous crowd of SDHS supporters started through the gate, receiving encouragement from cheer squads to bystanders. It is always a pleasure and an honor to participate in events that support the well-being of animals, especially those that need loving forever homes and to be called someone’s pet.
Meet Hiro! He was recently surrendered to a rescue group following a divorce. He is completely domesticated and extremely lovable. Like Hiro, many dogs end up in shelters at no fault of their own. Help us spread the word about pets like Hiro who are looking for a second chance at life by supporting pet adoption.
